In mostra  alla Govinda Gallery di Washington, le immagini di John Lennon e Yoko Ono scattate da Allan Tannenbaum nello studio di Soho: "A New York Love Story"

Nel Novembre del 1980 pochi giorni prima dell'assassinio di John Lennon, Allan Tannenbaum aveva completato una serie di scatti fotografici che ritraveano l'ex Beatle e la moglie Yoko Ono in posa. 

Dopo 5 anni  lontani dai riflettori John e Yoko giunsero a Soho, nello studio di Tannenbaum, cambiandosi gli abiti in strada per indossare dei kimono colorati. Le foto ritraggono una coppia che si spoglia del kimono e delle inibizioni e che mimano le posizioni dell'amore.

Dice il fotografo «Non riuscivo a credere che li stavo fotografando così, essere nudi per loro era una forma di espressione come un'altra: erano perfettamente a loro agio e mostravano più tenerezza che erotismo»

Solo dieci giorni dopo, John Lennon venne assasinato. La successiva serie di fotografie che Tannembaum scattò ritraggono una Yoko Ono che cammina per Central Park nascosta dietro grandi occhiali scuri.

Govinda Gallery is pleased to announce John & Yoko: A New York Love Story, an exhibition of photographs by Allan Tannenbaum. Presenting over fifty black and white and color photographs taken from 1973 to 1983, this exhibition also celebrates the publication of John & Yoko: A New York Love Story by Allan Tannenbaum (Insight Editions 2007), with a preface by Yoko Ono and an introduction by the book’s editor Chris Murray.

As an artist and musician, Tannenbaum had long loved rock and roll and the vibrant creative life of downtown New York. His first break as a photographer came in 1973, when he was assigned to cover the Avant-garde Art Festival for the SoHo Weekly News. In 1975, Tannenbaum photographed John Lennon’s last public performance at the Hilton Hotel in New York City. In 1980, Tannenbaum photographed Yoko Ono in his Tribeca studio for a feature story on Ono for the Soho News.

Tannenbaum went on to photograph John and Yoko on walks through Central Park, at their office Studio One, outside their residence at the Dakota and during the making of their video Just Like Starting Over. Tannenbaum’s photographs and stories are a rare document of John and Yoko’s life together in New York City. His skill and sensitivity as a photographer and the warm relationship he established with his subjects are apparent in the images gathered in this exhibition.

A stunning limited edition John and Yoko: A New York Love Story is available to collectors for $200.00. This edition is limited to 1250 signed and numbered books in a white cloth bound portfolio box with embossed title. An original, signed photograph by Allan Tannenbaum, produced especially for this edition, has been included in a portfolio sleeve unique to this edition. Also included is a facsimile compilation of three articles in the Soho Weekly News from December 1980 featuring John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
